A Century of Muslim struggle PDF  | Print |  E-mail

The Muslim Judicial Council will be hosting a Khatmul Quran programme in honour of all Muslims who have fallen in the struggle against apartheid. This event has been earmarked for the 19th of February 2012 at the St.Athens Road Masjid and intends to articulate the efforts and participation of the stalwarts of the Muslim community and all those who were at the forefront of the liberation movement. The nature of the program is to pay homage to the veterans of the struggle against apartheid, by honoring their involvement and their sacrifices in pursuit of a society, free from oppression, tyranny and racism.

Furthermore, we wish to conduct a broad based program on 22 February 2012 at the Athlone Civic Centre that would pay tribute to all sectors of the south African society, those who were at the beck and call of the liberation movement such as our educators, medical practitioners, the legal fraternity, trade unions, Imaams and even the Qurraa (Quranic Recites) all of who have played a vital role in the struggle against apartheid.

The proposed events will allow the general public to take a trip down memory lane by revisiting historical events that have shaped the nation, such as the Trojan Horse atrocity in Thornton Road and the Siege of the St Athens Road Mosque in Athlone, (the venue of our Khatmul Quran programme).

Finally, it is necessary for us to take cognisance of the fact that the freedom and the many liberties that we enjoy today came at the expense of many selfless sacrifices. It is therefore, only through the identification of the past and remembrance of past ideals that we may find the roadmap for the future. As a nation we cannot move forward if we have not found perspective to draw courage for today from our illustrious heritage and the legacy of great men and women. We are hopeful that the reflective Roll Call of Honour, of our fallen heroes and heroines will inspire and enable us to mobilize ourselves towards a future of coherency and unity of purpose as a proud nation.
