STATEMENT FROM MUSLIM JUDICIAL COUNCIL (SA) ON PASSING OF FORMER PRESIDENT NELSON MANDELA

6 December 2013

To God we belong and to Him we shall all return” Quran Chapter 2, verse 156

On behalf of the President, the Executive Council, its Senior Council, membership of the MJC and the Muslim community, we hereby wish to offer our sincere condolences to the wife Graca Machell, the children, grandchildren, family and friends, colleagues and associates, as well as to the South African Government and to all South Africans on the passing of our former President, Nelson Mandela.

During this time of mourning, South Africans and the global community face a stirring moment of great sadness at the demise of a great man, Rohlihlahla “Nelson” Mandela, fondly known as Madiba. Through the trials of the life of Madiba, the arrests, incarceration and isolation, it was his beautiful character that remained unblemished as the world witnessed when he stood before his oppressors, and when he finally tasted freedom after 27 years in prison.

We remember with fondness the honour he bestowed upon our late former President Shaykh Nazeem Mohamed, who offered a prayer at his (Madiba’s) inauguration in 1994.

Today, we remind ourselves more than ever, that we follow the legacy of a great man and that South Africa should live by his words when he said:

I can rest only for a moment, for with freedom comes responsibility, and I dare not linger, for my long walk is not yet ended”.

To this expression Tata, we say that your long walk will never end, and for those who come after you we pray they will uphold your legacy that will ensure that no human being should ever be oppressed because of his colour, race, religion or ethnicity. We at the MJC commit ourselves to uphold his legacy and spirit of self-sacrifice. We call upon all South Africans to make the same commitments.

Viva Madiba!

Rest in peace, son of the African soil!

Rest in peace, Madiba!

Hamba Khahle Madiba!
