Human Rights Declarations should be enforced and not merely serve as a document of pious hope. Human rights in Islam are firmly rooted in the belief that God Almighty, the creator of mankind is the Law Giver and the divine source of all human rights. Due to its Divine origin, no ruler, government, assembly or authority can curtail or violate in any way the human rights conferred by God, nor can they be surrendered.
The responsibility of the believers is to strive towards the implementation of these divine laws which confer honor and dignity to all mankind. These laws lay the foundation for a society devoid of exploitation, oppression and injustice. Islam encourages mankind towards virtuous deeds, which leads to living a life of God consciousness. Life is therefore lived with the knowledge and faith that love and respect for one another irrespective of color, social status, sex, race, strength, health, dignity or wealth affords us the satisfaction of Allah(God). Therefore love and consciousness of pleasing Allah(God) cannot stem from the hand which oppressors, exploits and is unjust. As the worst human rights atrocities continues to be witnessed in countries such as Palestine, Afghanistan, Iraq and the Congo, we hope that the declarations stipulated by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights will be enforced to afford value to its aim of preserving human dignity and equality. Added to this, the banning referendum of minarets in Switzerland and the intolerance expressed of women in hijab in European countries should be addressed as some of the areas which the UN Declaration of Human Rights does not detail. Muslims therefore seek the rights for the restructuring of the UN Declaration of Human Rights which would afford explicit freedom of Muslims to practice their religion in accordance with the sharia. Allah says in the Holy Quran: “ O you who believe ! Stand out firmly for Allah and be just witnesses and let not the enmity and hatred of others make you avoid justice. Be just: that is nearer to piety, and fear Allah. Verily, Allah is Well-Acquainted with what you do.” Quran [5:8] |
