The Muslim Judicial Council (MJC) pays tribute and bids farewell to Shaykh Doctor Mohamed Salie Dien(ra), the life president of the MJC who passed away on the 19 June 2010, 7 Rajab 1432 at the age of 89 years.  Shaykh Mohamed Salie Dien was born in Wynberg, Cape Town on January 13, 1920 to Abdurahmaan (Manie) and Ayesha Dien.

Youth Day commemorates the power and strength of young people. It is a day to commemorate the lives lost during South Africa’s struggle for freedom and liberation as well as a day to showcase the success and achievements of young people today. It is a day to emphasize consciousness of social ills plaguing society and a day to emphasize and instill the desire to act and bring about positive change to our community.

To bring about this change, it is critical that young people appreciate and apply the teachings of the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) to their lives. Young people face many challenges when growing up in western societies and therefore more effort and emphasis must be placed on practicing and applying Islamic principles and values. The Prophet (SAW) remains a continuing inspiration and role model for both young and old.

The Muslim Judicial Council SA congratulates Shaykh Salie Dien Life President of the Muslim Judicial Council, on receiving an Honorary Doctorate from the University of the Western Cape.

The University of the Western Cape bestowed an Honorary Doctorate on Shaykh Mohamed Salie Dien (90) at his bedside the 10th June 2010. The ceremony was unique in that it was held at the ailing Muslim leader’s Athlone home and was officiated by UWC Rector Prof Brian O’Connell and UWC Registrar Dr Ingrid Miller, replete in their academic regalia. Members of the Muslim Judicial Council, friends, family and the UWC leadership, including UWC Chairperson of Council Brian Williams, gathered to mark the conferring of a Doctor of Philosophy Degree (Doctor Philosophiae Honoris Causa).

South Africa's response to the dastardly act of piracy and blatant savagery by the Israeli regime is reflective of a global mood that is increasingly becoming less tolerant of contemptuous disregard for international obligations flowing from a variety of conventions.

In addition to the decision to recall its Tel Aviv based ambassador, South Africa has also summoned the Israeli ambassador and presented him with a demarche, the strongest possible diplomatic protest short of expulsion. And included among 31 nations on the UN Human Rights Council, South Africa voted in support of a resolution that condemned Israel’s outrageous attack and endorsed a full inquiry into the incident.
